A New Bedford man is at Rhode Island Hospital this afternoon after falling out of a window and being struck by a garbage truck.

The Standard Times reports that 55-year-old Manuel Erinna of 50 Nye St was attempting to throw trash out of a second story window and into an approaching garbage truck when the incident occurred.

The truck was reportedly moving forward towards an empty dumpster when Erinna fell 35-feet to the ground behind the truck. The driver could not see Erinna and ended up striking him as he backed out of the driveway. The driver did stop when he heard a woman screaming that there was a man behind the truck.

Police say Erinna was "in and out of consciousness" at the scene and did suffer trauma from the fall. He may also have broken his legs. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment and there are no further details on his condition at this time.
