NEW BEDFORD—Twenty-nine year-old Josue Alexis Castro was arrested Sunday in connection with the attempted armed robberies of Subway restaurant, 836 Pleasant St. earlier in the day and Sunstar Grocery, 639 County St., the day before.

Police received a report of an attempted robbery at Subway at 4:15 p.m. Sunday. Based on descriptions provided by employees and security footage, Castro was apprehended by police after being observed in the area of Franklin and Purchase streets.

Castro was found hiding between two houses. He was found in possession of a BB gun which was used in the attempted robbery earlier in the day.

He was charged with two counts of attempted armed robbery and two counts of assault with intent to rob, since he also attempted to rob the Sunstar Grocery at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, armed with a knife.

Castro has defaulted on 25 court cases in the past and has been arraigned 30 times in adult court.

At the time of his arrest, he had four outstanding warrants. Castro has prior convictions for dealing cocaine, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and receiving stolen property.

He was arraigned today in Third District Court. The District Attorney’s office requested $75,000 bail. The judge subsequently set bail at $20,000. He is currently being held.
