School administrators, city officials and members of the swim team gathered around the pool Thursday to celebrate the renovations.

According to Southcoast Today, three years ago, Mayor John Mitchell visited the New Bedford High School and a custodian called their attention to the pool.  Mitchell said "It was very steamy, and things were clearly rundown. The tiles in the pool were falling off, it was in a real state of disrepair," Thursday.

He then visited the room filled with the pumps that run the pool.  Everything in the room was rusted he said, and one of the walls looked like it might buckle.

After his visit. he applied for a city bond to cover the renovation costs that came to about $900,000. The pool's renovation is taking place in three phases, with the third not yet completed. In the first phase, tiles, diving boards, blocks, scoreboards and touch pads were added, while in the second phase, filtration systems and other infrastructure was upgraded. In the third phase, locker rooms will be renovated. The pool we also allow administrators to train students for lifeguard certification.

While the pool was undergoing rennovations, the swim team has been practicing with Bishop Stang at the UMass Dartmouth pool.

Kyleigh Barao, a leading member of the New Bedford Swim Team says "They re-did all the tiling for the pool and the filtration systems, got a brand new full scoreboard, and my favorite part, they got really awesome brand new dive blocks. The pool looks amazing!".
