Two 14-year-old juveniles have been arrested after an attempted robbery and attack on a New Bedford store clerk.

Police say two officers on patrol around 8:40 Wednesday night heard glass shatter and saw two masked males running from the scene in the area of Rivet and Hyacinth streets in the South End. Both males were taken into custody and brought back to the Herbalife business where the suspects had run from.

The 19-year-old clerk told the officers the males rushed into the store and struck him in the face with a metal bar while he tried defending himself with a shovel. The clerk suffered severe bruising to his left eye and was treated at St. Luke's Hospital.

The victim said the suspects smashed the front window of the store before leaving without any cash.

The officers recovered the masks and the metal bar used in the attack.

The 14-year-olds have been arraigned in New Bedford Juvenile Court on charges of armed assault with intent to rob, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, destruction of property and disturbing the peace.
