It is always heartbreaking to hear of families going through some hard times but this one hits particularly close to home.

Luis and Susana Sousa of New Bedford, who ten yeas ago lost their first son, Nicolas, have just found out their 16 month old son, Athyn, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. He immediately began to undergo chemotherapy treatments at Boston Children's Hospital on February 1. Athyn will eventually need surgery to remove a tumor in his kidney.

Sue was the owner of Mother-Daughter Cakes in New Bedford, but has since shut down her business to be with her son. Luis is an employee at New England Stamped Concrete and has taken a leave of absence to care for their son. The couple also has an eight year old daughter, Kailey.

To support the Sousa family during this difficult time donations are being accepted at Athyn's Fight Against Cancer.

A fundraising trip to Foxwoods Resort and Casino has been set up and all proceeds will benefit the Sousa family. The trip cost is $30 and includes bus transportation, buffet, and $10 free play. If you are interested in attended join the Facebook page.
