May 18 kicks off National Dog Bite Prevention Week with a record number of 4.5 million Americans being bitten by dogs each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and half of the bite victims are children! But, dog attacks on letter carriers has been unprecedented with over 5,500 postal workers being attacked in 2013.

The Postal Service suggests you enclose your dog in a separate room before going outside to collect the mail. Remind children that dogs need to be secured and remind the kids not to take mail directly from postal workers in front of your dog.

Warning: when a dog bites a mail carrier, the Post Office ends door-side delivery to the home of the dog owner. Dog bites are one of the biggest reasons the Postal Service has been moving away from delivering mail at the door stoop and now prefers cluster boxes located at a place neighbors have to walk to.

A list complied by the U.S. Postal Service ranks the worst cities in the nation for dog attacks and bites. Here are the top 10:

  1. Houston…you have a problem!
  2. Los Angeles
  3. Cleveland
  4. San Diego
  5. Chicago
  6. Baltimore
  7. Dallas
  8. Denver
  9. Columbus
  10. Kansas City
