NEW BEDFORD — The woman whose child was found choking on a plastic bag containing fentanyl-laced heroin has been ordered held as the result of a dangerousness hearing.

On Thursday, a judge in New Bedford Third District Court ordered that Saranah Raposa, 30, of New Bedford, be held up to 120 days as she awaits trial.

Raposa is charged with reckless endangerment to a child under 14, possession of heroin, and assault and battery on a child with a dangerous weapon (A bag of heroin).

On August 27, first responders were called to Raposa's Grinnell Street apartment on a report of a child that wasn't breathing. Raposa initially told police and paramedics that the 21-month-old boy was choking on a plastic bag, and later admitted that the bag contained heroin.

The child had begun exhibiting symptoms of a drug overdose, and was placed on a Narcan drip and transported to Boston Children's Hospital where the boy's condition improved.

A warrant for Raposa's arrest was obtained by police last week, and Raposa was arrested on Tuesday in Attleboro. She was ordered held without bail at her initial arraignment.

Both the toddler and Raposa's four-year-old son have been placed into the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.
