The UMass Dartmouth Freedom Fest has been cancelled this year. That means one of the biggest 4th of July fireworks displays on the Southcoast won't be happening. I must admit, I've always thought the headlining band choice for this event was somewhat interesting. A Latin pop band...to remember America in 1776? Is it me? Or is that a little weird?

Year after year the Latin pop band, Santa Mumba, has headlined the Freedom Fest.

While I certainly enjoy the music of Santa Mumba, I don't normally equate Latin music to the struggle to free the American colonies from the British empire. I like hearing Irish music on St. Patrick's Day. And I'm a fan of a good polka...but not during 4th of July fireworks. I guess I'm more of a traditional guy when it comes to 4th of July music. I like hearing the patriotic music from the Boston Pops that gets played at the Esplanade in Boston. The Dartmouth town band does play more traditional patriotic music during the fireworks.

So what makes more sense... this?

Or something a little more patriotic... like this?
