For over a decade, shoppers have looked forward to the Massachusetts sales tax holiday...generally one weekend in August. The first Massachusetts tax holiday was in 2004. With the exception of 2009, the legislature has voted for one each year.

However, state lawmakers are questioning whether or not the state can afford the loss of tax revenue this year. According to the Boston Globe, the state's Department of Revenue reported that last year’s sales tax holiday on August 15th and 16th cost the state about 26 million dollars. With the state in a big time budget crunch, state officials are weary about losing that kind of cash.

Massachusetts retailers look at the tax holiday as a spending boon during what can be a slow month.
