In May 1974, Massachusetts unveiled the nation's first "instant game" and according to The Boston Globe, each ticket cost $1 and offered payoffs as high as $10,000. This week, with the 40th anniversary of scratch tickets coming to Massachusetts, the Mass Lottery is unveiling a $30 ticket offering a grand prize of $15 million.

Local liquor store owners in the state told the Globe that back in 1974 "it was instant insanity." The Lottery isn't expecting crowds to overtake the small businesses although the $30 does offer the best odds of coming out a winner.
