The manatee rescued recently off Cape Cod is apparently expecting.

Seems the International Fund for Animal Welfare saved more than just one manatee when they rescued the female that had been spotted in the waters around Cape Cod at the end of the summer.

The 1,100 lb mammal was taken to Mystic Aquarium for evaluation before a planned open water release in Florida.

The IFAW says an ultrasound at the aquarium determined that the manatee was four to five months pregnant.

They say she will remain at Mystic Aquarium to be monitored during the pregnancy (which for manatees is about one year), but will ultimately be transported to a longer term rehabilitation facility before being released into the warmer waters of Florida.

Manatees are an endangered species, so this rescue of a pregnant female is a truly remarkable thing.
