Man Shot in Eleventh Shooting of 2018 in New Bedford Neighborhood
NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police are investigating after a man arrived at St. Luke's Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back on Wednesday night.
Lt. Nathaniel Rodriguez, spokesman for the New Bedford Police Department, confirmed to WBSM News that a male victim arrived at the St. Luke's Hospital emergency room before 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The man apparently told police he had been shot in the back near the 200-block of Cedar Street. The victim's condition is not known at this time.
Lt. Rodriguez was not able to confirm if there were any further injuries or property damage as a result of the reported shooting.
It's not yet known if an arrest in connection to the reported shooting has been made.
The neighborhood the shooting allegedly took place in has seen an unusually high number of shooting incidents this year, with Wednesday night's incident marking the eleventh shooting or report of shots fired logged in the immediate area.
Late last week, on Saturday, August 4, New Bedford Police found a shell casing in the 0-block of Parker Street at around 6:35 p.m. after a bystander reported hearing several gunshots. No property damage or injuries were reported.
On Tuesday, July 17, ShotSpotter, the city's gunshot detection system, alerted police to a number of possible shots fired in the area of 245 Cedar Street. Apparent bullet damage was found in a home and a vehicle in the area.
On July 15, a man was shot multiple times in the 400-block of Cottage Street.
On June 12, ShotSpotter detected possible gunfire in the 100-block of Campbell Street. Police found evidence that confirmed shots had been fired.
Police found property damage believed to be caused by bullets following a reported shooting on June 4 in the 80-block of Parker Street.
The residence at 66 Robeson Street was damaged by a bullet back on March 11.
On January 10, a bullet entered the dining room of second floor apartment at 69 Locust Street. The next night, there were reports of shots fired in the area of Pope and Summer Streets.
On February 1, there was a report of shots fired in the area of 250 Summer Street, near Pope Street. Shortly after the shooting, witnesses reported the house at 250 Summer Street was tagged with graffiti reading “WOMAN BEATER” and “GANG GANG.”
Then on February 20, a woman was shot “near the torso area,” according to New Bedford Police, in the area of 130 Chestnut Street. The victim was transported to an area hospital and later released.
