One person is in critical condition following an early morning crash in Westport.

Det. Jeff Majewski says that at 12:50 a.m. Monday Dartmouth Police received a report of a crash near State Rd.

Upon arrival officers spotted a 2006 Nissan Altima which had sustained catastrophic front end damage and a seriously injured driver.

Majewski says the driver was heading east on State Rd., failed to negotiate a turn, crossed the median, and partially travelled airborne.

The car continued on the wrong side of the road and crossed both westbound travel lanes before striking a large granite post.

The engine was forced into the driver's compartment and the battery was thrown from the car.

Majewski says it's believed the car was travelling over 75 miles per hour and didn't brake before crashing.

The driver, identified only as a 27-year-old male was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

No one else was in the car other injuries were reported.
