In 1899, African American golf fan Dr. George Franklin Grant received a patent for the world's first golf tee. Grant was also a professor at Harvard and a dentist in Boston.

in 1871, He then took a position in the department of mechanical dentistry, which made him Harvard's first African American faculty member.

Before his invention of the wooden golf tee, golfers had to carry around buckets of sand and build a pile before every shot. Golfers complained that it was messy and too time consuming. Sounds fun right?
