I’ve seen some strange stuff in my time, but generally weird things are relegated to weird places. We keep a separation between the world of the mundane and the world of the unusual. You expect to see the freaky stuff in the woods, or off the beaten path—not in broad daylight, on a quiet historic street in a seaside town.

But weird truly knows no boundaries.

So in a way, it’s a perfect fit that one of the oddest attractions on the SouthCoast sits a few feet from an ordinary sidewalk on an ordinary street.

In a beautiful neighborhood in Mattapoisett, you’ll find Teresa Dall’s Barbie Garden. It’s right on the corner of North and Church Streets, in her front yard, behind an iron gate.

Dall says she was inspired by the Provincetown Barbie Garden, which you can see in this video from 1996. Dall started her own version in 1998, and it’s been going strong ever since.

I’d heard some of my co-workers talking about the Barbie Garden in recent weeks, and I figured I had to check it out for myself. I generally find most dolls to be creepy, but I’m not really weirded out by Barbie. I thought I’d be just fine.

So colleague Kristen and I jumped in the car and made the short drive over from the station to the Barbie Garden. We parked on Church Street, remarking about how beautiful the old historic houses are, and how peaceful the neighborhood felt. In fact, the Barbie Garden is in the front yard of the 1828 Prentice Crosby house, so the home is even more of a milestone that the doll garden.

But the garden itself was just—well, it was just weird. It’s a hodgepodge of different dolls, action figures and figurines, with some strange scenes and odd oeuvres. Wrestling figures, historical authors and playwrights, giant insects, and more are mixed in among the Barbies. It’s definitely something you need to see for yourself, which you can do in the video or the photo gallery below.

What do you think? Is the Mattapoisett Barbie Garden the strangest spot on the SouthCoast, or do you know of something weirder? Let us know under this story on our Facebook page.
