The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in sending $73 million to Massachusetts to fund programs for the homeless in the current year.

As part of that money, New Bedford is receiving $1.7 million to aid the city's homeless population.

The money goes to the Homeless Service Providers Network in New Bedford, a group of local organizations operating shelters and other programs to aid homeless families and individuals.
