Winter can be pretty rough and damaging to your lips. Find out how to protect your lips this winter. When you get ready for a cold winter day you grab your gloves and maybe a scarf but what about your lips? Your lips are the last things you cover up, if you do at all.

Here are a few tips from Cleveland Clinic to keep your lips healthy and smooth:

1) Don't lick your lips! - It might seem like the natural thing to do when your lips are dry. Dr. Piliang says the enzymes in saliva are actually pretty irritating for your lips.

2) Use a ointment based lip balm - Ointments like petrolatum, essential oils or glycerin help lock in moisture.

3) Avoid lip balms containiing camphor, eucalyptus, and menthol - these substances dry out your lips and makes the problem worse.

4) Don't rub your lips while they are cracked/peeling - this creates more cracks and sores.

5) Treat cracks right away - they become worse and elevate to cold sores

6) At night, apply lip balm before you go to bed. - Some people sleep with their mouths open, making the mouth very dry.
