There was a gas explosion early this morning on Richmond Street in New Bedford.

Update 1:13pm -- Arrest made this morning at 10am.  46 year old Kevin Livramento, who lives in the house directly behind the one that exploded (47 Highland Street).  He was initially brought to St. Luke’s Hospital with facial injuries, but has been transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  Police believe he acted alone.

Police say someone broke into the home and was in the process of stealing copper piping when the thief accidentally cut into a steel pipe that fed natural gas into the water heater, causing the gas to build up and eventually ignite an explosion.

No one was inside at the time of the explosion, but there was major damage to the house.  A white man in his 30's or 40's was seen fleeing the scene at about 3:45am on an old bicycle and carrying a backpack.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Greg Sirois at 508-991-6300 ext. 137.
