A homeless man has died in New Bedford's South End.

New Bedford Police say a worker atop the hurricane barrier reported finding the man just after 5:30am Tuesday at Cove Road near Stapleton Street. The man was reportedly having trouble breathing, and soon passed away.

Police tell WBSM News a preliminary investigation reveals the man had a tube for medical purposes in his neck, and had tried ingesting a piece of pizza when he had difficulty swallowing. He began choking on the food and passed away as a result.

Police say the man was part of a homeless encampment, or "tent city" that has been assembled behind the hurricane barrier in that area.

The man's identity and age has not been released.
