The "chronically under-performing" school is getting rid of homework, will it work though?

According to Western Mass News, the principal at the Kelly Elementary School in Holyoke, MA is giving it a shot...a year with no homework.  She says there is no data that supports that homework offers any benefit to elementary aged students.

As a parent of two elementary school students, I would welcome a trial of a no homework year at their school.  With family time at such a premium, it's hard not to resent homework time.  I'd much rather see them spending that time playing outside with their friends, participating in sports, and then sitting down as a family to a dinner table.  Instead, the kids could commit to nightly reading.

What are your thoughts?
