Fireworks will be visible over New Bedford Harbor on July 4 thanks in part to a $10,000 donation from Hawthorn Medical.

Mayor Jon Mitchell and Hawthorn Medical CEO James Gularek made the announcement during a Wednesday afternoon press conference in the Ashley Room at City Hall.

Mayor Mitchell said that while many communities have had to cut back on their displays due to budget concerns New Bedford has been able to keep it going, much to the benefit of the city's economy.

"Not only are fireworks displays important events to celebrate our nation's history, and our nation's birthday, they're also good urban placemaking," said Mitchell "they draw people into downtowns, people go out to eat, they spend money on the local economy, and that's what we want to promote."

Gularek said that Hawthorn Medical has been helping to sponsor this event for roughly six years and they plan to continue in the future.

"Hawthorn physicians are very, very proud to help sponsor this for the city and give the community an evening of enjoyment and festivities that perhaps may not have occured, had it not been needed a few years ago and we're looking forward to a long committment with the city for future endeavors," said Gularek.

Along with the fireworks display Mayor Mitchell says residents will also see a visible police presence on hand.

"There will be a very visible police presence along the waterfront and the downtown on the fourth and they will be on the lookout for anything suspicious," said Mitchell.

The Mayor's office says 2016 City of New Bedford Fourth of July Fireworks Display is also being sponsored by St. Anne’s Credit Union and The New Bedford Whaling Museum.

In addition Tucker Roy Marine Towing & Salvage and AG Marine Contractors are supporting the event this year by providing the commercial barge.

The event will begin at 9:00 PM on July 4th, from a barge located off of State Pier in New Bedford Harbor.

Those heading Downtown to watch the display are encouraged to park for free in the Elm Street Garage and Zeiterion Parking Garage.

During the fireworks display State Pier will not be accessible no parking will be allowed on State Pier on the evening of July 4th.

Vehicle traffic will be closed on Lower Union Street (east of Water Street) and city officials say it will be the best spot in the Downtown for pedestrians to view the fireworks display.
