A local gym owner facing charges relating to a heroin distribution scheme could be approved to coach city youth football.

A U.S. District Court record says that after a hearing before a federal magistrate, New Bedford resident Sharik Mendes could be ok'd to coach Pop Warner football in New Bedford. The filing says Mendes, the owner of H.E.A.R.T. Boxing Gym, must inform parents of the pending charges and court case against him before he can coach.

Mendes is expected to plead guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute heroin after waiving his right to an indictment. A plea hearing is scheduled for September 13 at U.S. District Court in Boston.

Prosecutors allege Mendes supplied heroin to a local dealer who sold the drugs in New Bedford and Fall River.
