Disturbing details are coming out about the apparent suicide of former New England Patriots star and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez.

Local media in Massachusetts report Hernandez cut his finger and wrote "John 3:16" in blood on his forehead. The 27-year-old also had his Bible open to that verse, which says whoever believes in God "shall not perish but have eternal life." Some outlets are saying it was "blood red marker" that Hernandez used to scrawl "John 3:16."

There's also reportedly evidence that Hernandez smoked synthetic marijuana before hanging himself in his jail cell.

Hernandez was serving life in prison for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. Last week, he was acquitted of fatally shooting two men outside a Boston nightclub in 2012.
