New Bedford's already tight 2016 budget looks to get even tighter as city officials try to make do.

Monday night, more department heads met with the City Council to go over individual cuts and increases for next year's budget. Some officials described needing to eliminate positions in money-saving moves, with those responsibilities spread out to others.

After meeting with all department heads, Councilors will make additional cut requests on June 22 for a final budget cutting session. Once those cut requests are voted on, the FY 2016 budget will go before the full City Council on June 25.

City Marketing and Tourism Director, Dagny Ashley, says budget cuts often mean getting creative.

"You're always looking for a way to improve the city, to improve its branding, and its marketing, and its advertising. So, when you have to take away from that, it's kind of, somewhat slightly daunting but then you think to yourself, 'let's just find a better solution to marketing the city and branding with a smaller budget,'" said Ashley.

Mayor Jon Mitchel's initial proposed budget totals about $297 Million.
