Geralyn Lucas spoke with us this morning about her new book, "Then Came Life." Her first book, "Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy," inspired the TV movie on Lifetime by the same title.

Geralyn was about to undergo surgery to remove her breast. She didn't want to feel like she lost her sense of womanhood and wanted to embrace that part of her. So she wore a shade of red lipstick that lasted the duration of her procedure (seven hours).

Lucas was only 27 when she received her diagnosis. She said that things seemed to be just "starting" when the news of her illness struck. One day she got her first real job, and was thinking of talking to her doctor about trying to get pregnant. The next, it seemed like it had all been ripped from her hands, and how "cruel" it was to end everything before it truly began. Yet somehow, she managed to find the strength to fight and win the battle against cancer. She has been cancer-free for 19 years now, and she tells her story about life after in her newest book.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Geralyn hopes her story will offer hope to other women who have gone through similar situations, but other women in a "coming of age" scenario as well.
