Hearing a loud booming sound in the middle of the night? Well, it has been the case for many New Englanders lately and Frost Quakes are the reason to blame. The noises, similar to earth quakes, are what they are calling Frost Quakes. These thundering sounds are more than likely coming from your roof or attic.

According to WCVB, experts described Frost Quakes as the thermal expansion and contraction. This means that the components in your home are shrinking and expanding with the extremes changes in temperature. With all the below zero temperature we've been having this could explain the frequency of the frost quakes.

When materials are tightly secured with nails or fasteners and the pressue becomes to great, the energy may release suddenly. This sudden release can cause loud thud noises.

Luckily, well built homes are usually able to handle it. If you already cleared your roof of snow and ice, these thud noises don't really mean any serious problems.
