New Bedford firefighters had to extinguish a man that had apparently caught fire in the city's North End Thursday morning.

Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News fire crews responded to a report of a basement fire at a residence at 57 Lauren Drive off of Phillips Road around 9:30 Thursday morning. Upon arrival, firefighters found a man on fire in the basement. The fire was quickly extinguished.

Chief Gomes says the unidentified man suffered burns to 25% of his body. He's been transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is being treated for his injuries. Gomes says the fire was isolated to the man and a chair he was sitting in.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Gomes says he does not know how the ignition source and the fuel came together.
