Fire Destroys Large Barn in South Dartmouth

District Two firefighters in Dartmouth were busy for more than four hours Saturday, dousing a barn fire at 777 Horseneck Road in South Dartmouth.

Chief Tim Andre says firefighters responded to the blaze just after 6 a.m. He says the barn, a two-story structure about 25 feet by 40 feet, was completely destroyed by the flames.

Andre says his men had trouble getting water on the fire because of a lack of hydrants in that area.

The chief says while there were no injuries, about 25 chickens and 100 baby chicks perished in the fire.

Andre says the fire was unintentional, but the cause remains under investigation. He says an issue involving a heating lamp likely ignited the blaze.
