LOS ANGELES — Twentieth Century Fox is working on a new film featuring an infamous Boston mobster.

The media giant acquired the rights to Thacher Island, a true-crime pitch based on the book Animal: The Bloody Rise and Fall of the Mob's Most Feared Assassin. The animal the book refers to is the late mob enforcer Joe "The Animal" Barboza.

Barboza, a New Bedford native, was determined to become the first Portuguese man inducted into La Cosa Nostra, an honor only bestowed on Italians. He became ruthless on his quest for induction, and is believed to be responsible for over 20 killings.
