Selfie sticks have been recently banned from many locations, such as Disney World and the White House.

However, the popular photo device can also be used to rescue someone from drowning.

According to Scripps Media.com, a family from Texas put the selfie stick to use after getting caught up in a deadly rip current at Surfside Beach in Nantucket.

On Tuesday, tourists Derrick Johns, his wife, and 16-year-old daughter, Erynn, were out enjoying a swim when suddenly they were swept up by a large rip current.

At the time, Erynn had a selfie stick handy with a GoPro camera attached to it. The camera recorded the event as it unfolded.

The selfie stick proved that it can do other things besdies recording. Derrick used it as a survival tool to pull Erynn towards the shore. A man then rushed to help her to safety, while her parents were swept farther out in the water.

With assistance of lifeguards and a good Samaritan, the couple made their way out of the water.
