NEW BEDFORD — The man who was killed in a crash in New Bedford earlier this week had helped save the life of a gunshot victim in Fall River last month.

According to the Herald News, a man who had been shot in the leg on October 29 made his way to Gilbert's Jewelers on Pleasant Street in Fall River, seeking help. David Dos Santos, an employee at the jewelry store, and another store employee assisted the 23-year-old victim until paramedics arrived at the scene. Dos Santos and his co-worker gave the victim a towel to apply pressure to the wound while they called 911.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, and a suspect has turned himself in to police in connection with the shooting.

Dos Santos was killed Tuesday morning in New Bedford as the car he was driving collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Kempton Street and Brownell Avenue.

The driver of the other car, a 27-year-old New Bedford man, suffered moderate injuries and has been released from an area hospital.

No charges have been filed in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Dos Santos leaves behind two young daughters.
