The city of Fall River got a shout-out in the legendary weekly magazine, The New Yorker.

Thomas McGuane, an acclaimed American author, wrote about his experience at his grandmother’s home in Fall River back in 1955.

McGuane, who regularly writes for the magazine, spoke like a SouthCoast resident referencing Brownell Street, the textile industry and even using the term “Portagee”.

Although McGuane was born in the Midwest he has local roots. His Irish Catholic parents moved from Massachusetts to the Midwest before he was born.

The author reminisces about his time as a teenager talking about his Irish heritage and other things that SouthCoast natives can appreciate.
