Police departments across the Commonwealth are gearing up to ensure drivers are safe this holiday season.

The Fairhaven Police Department is joining over 200 other police forces across the state in this year's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, having received a $2,500 federal grant from the Highway Safety Division.

Fairhaven Police Sergeant Kevin Kobza tells WBSM News there are no lack of services on the Southcoast to ensure that you and your loved ones get home safe from holiday parties. "Between Uber, taxi cabs, responsible drivers and designated drivers there's no reason to get behind the wheel while you're under the influence," says Kobza.

And "influence" doesn't just mean alcohol, says Kobza. "We've had numerous cases of people overdosing on drugs while behind the wheel. That will be a focus of this mobilization as well."

Kobza says the penalties for impaired driving vary, but assures that any impaired driver found by police will be arrested and their vehicle impounded.

The grant will pay for overtime costs for police officers, who will be spending extra time keeping a trained eye out for impaired drivers.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign runs from December 9 through January 1.
