Eversource Warns About Scammers Selling Discounted Power

Eversource is warning its customers to be aware of scammers claiming to sell electricity at reduced rates.

Eversource spokesman Mike Durand tells WBSM News they have been receiving reports from many customers who have been getting home visits or unsolicited phone calls from people people selling "discounted power."

Often times the caller will claim to be a representative of Eversource or claim they have a partnership with the company.

However, Durand says that's not the way Eversource operates.

"If you're receiving phone calls from someone saying they're a representative of Eversource and offering to sell you discounted power, that is not us," said Durand "we are a regulated delivery company and we don't market electricity supply to our customers."

Durand says customers can verify they are speaking with an Eversource representative by asking for some basic information about their account like the name on the account, the account address, and the exact balance due.

Many of these calls or visits will come from people claiming to represent a third-party supplier.

While customers can purchase electricity from third party dealers, Durand says it is best to proceed cautiously.

"Unless customers are sure of the legitimacy of the company that is offering to sell them power, we advise that they never provide a copy of their utility bill or any account information to someone who is unsolicited," said Durand "either on the phone or at the door."

Competitive suppliers within the Commonwealth are licensed by the Mass. Department of Public Utilities which maintains a list of current offers available from suppliers on their website.

Durand is asking anyone who believes they have been targeted by improper solicitation to contact Eversource directly at 1-800-592-2000.

The company keeps track of these types of customer concerns and reports them to state regulators.
