School had let out for the holidays and it was almost Christmas time for my 10-year-old self. My parents told me that I would be spending Christmas this year with my grandparents in a little, rural town in Wisconsin called Amery. Not only was this a big deal because it would be the first time I'd be spending the holidays without my parents, but this city boy from the West Coast had never seen snow before. As you can imagine, I was starting to freak out.

When I first arrived, it was as if the entire place was covered in a white blanket. I immediately started rolling snowballs based on what I had seen in movies and needless to say, they weren’t the best. My aunt had to shove me in the car, just so we could get started driving to Amery.

I remember showing up on Santa’s door step. Well, it was only my grandfather, but still, the beards were identical. My favorite part was joining my uncle and grandfather in going into the woods to cut down the Christmas tree for our living room. We spent the whole night drinking hot cocoa and playing board games until it was finally morning and I was able to open my presents. Not a bad first white Christmas for a kid from L.A.
