NEW BEDFORD - Massachusetts State Police continue to investigate a serious accident involving a car and a pedestrian in New Bedford Tuesday morning.

Massachusetts State Police tell WBSM News that at 6:20 a.m., State Police received a report of a pedestrian that had been hit while crossing the southbound lanes of Route 18, south of the I-195 overpass and just before the Purchase Street exit.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a 2006 Toyota Camry driven by an 81-year-old Acushnet man struck the pedestrian, a 28-year-old South Yarmouth man, causing serious injuries.

The 28-year-old victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in serious condition.

State Police say the accident remains under investigation.

No charges are being filed against the driver at this time.
