A male dolphin died at a Rhode Island beach Tuesday morning, despite rescue attempts by volunteers.

According to NBC 10, the dolphin had beached itself on North Kingstown Town Beach and was discovered around 7:30 a.m.

Volunteers called for help and tried to get the dolphin back to safety in the water, but sadly it died on the beach before rescuers arrived at the scene.

NBC 10 reports that Mystic Aquarium is going to perform a necropsy on the dolphin to try and discover why it had beached itself in the first place.
