Police are asking the public to be cautious when walking their dogs in Portsmouth.

A Portsmouth animal control officer received a report of a coyote attacking a large breed dog on Monday and police say the coyote did get away.

The dog sustained a large bite wound but the dog's owner was able to get help and the dog was treated for its wounds.

In a Facebook post from police, they ask the public to report any incidents of coyotes acting strangely to Portsmouth animal control at 401-643-0136.

They also shared a photo of a coyote that was seen in the area where the attack happened, but it has not been determined if the coyote in the photo is the one that attacked the dog.
