The New England Patriots have officially lost running back Dion Lewis for the season. After leaving the team's 27-10 win over the Washington Redskins yesterday with an apparent knee injury, the tough to hear news was reported today. An MRI done on Lewis' left knee revealed that New England's top back tore his ACL.

The injury will, of course, cost Lewis the rest of his season, as normal recovery time is usually about 11 months.

Earlier today, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick declined to update the state of Lewis' injury during his normal Monday morning press conference. Reports, yesterday, said that the Patriots were hoping that the injury was no worse than a sprained MCL, after initial tests.

The void created by Lewis' absence will be a big one for the team to fill, as the diminutive back was in the midst of a break out season. After sitting out last year,Lewis joined the Patriots this off season and won the starting job out of camp. Through just six and a half games, the 25-year-old had complied 622 total yards and four touchdowns, working as a dual threat in both the passing and rushing game in New England's chameleon-like offense.

The team currently has running backs LaGarrette Blount, Brandon Bolden and James White on the active roster.
