Mayor Jon Mitchell announced on Monday that he will appoint Capt. Joseph C. Cordeiro as New Bedford's new police chief.

The announcement was made during a ceremony in the Ashley Room at City Hall.

Cordeiro, 51, who is currently the commander of the downtown station, was selected over the other finalist Lt. Richard Netinho, who is in charge of the evening shift at the downtown station.

Cordeiro succeeds the late Police Chief David Provencher, who passed away unexpectedly in December.

A formal swearing-in will take place on Thursday.
