New Bedford Police Chief David A. Provencher was laid to rest Saturday morning after passing away unexpectedly earlier in the week.

Dozens of police officers from all over the SouthCoast attended the services, along with family, friends and local elected officials.

The funeral was held at St. Joseph - St. Therese Parish, where Rev. Phillip Hamel reflected on Provencher's humility and service during his homily.

Following the mass, a motorcade procession traveled to Sacred Heart Cemetery for a Christian burial.

Provencher, 59, died of respiratory arrest Sunday evening. He was a member of the New Bedford Police Department for 35 years and served as chief for five years.

On Sunday, the City of New Bedford will host a memorial service for Chief Provencher at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. The public is invited. Doors open at 10:30 AM and the service will begin at 11.
