Massachusetts State Police say a multi-town car chase that started in Rochester began after the suspect was seen hitting his own car with a hatchet.

State Police Media Relations say 50-year-old Randall Harrison of New Bedford got into his 2004 Chevy Blazer as police responded and led police on a chase that looped through the Southcoast, eventually coming to a stop in New Bedford. Harrison's car had been cornered by police, who forced him out of his vehicle with their guns drawn.

Police say Harrison was waving a hatchet and a knife out of the window during the chase. He was also in possession of butane fluid and a lighter, and police say Harrison had doused himself with the butane lighter fluid during the chase.

Harrison is being evaluated at St. Luke's Hospital. State Police will process his arrest upon his release.
