UPDATE (11:25 P.M.) — Massachusetts State Police say the bus that crashed into the woods on Route 24 South in Berkley on Saturday night was returning to Tiverton, Rhode Island, after the 25 occupants on board had visited LaSalette Shrine in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.

State Police say the crash took place at 9:50 p.m.

Two adults were transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. All others aboard the bus were transported Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River and Morton Hospital in Taunton for treatment of minor injuries or for precautionary reasons.

The bus had veered off of the right shoulder of the highway near Exit 11 and crashed into the treeline. The bus remained upright.

A passenger car had also veered off of the road on the right side of the highway. State Police say the female driver of that vehicle was not injured, and the role of the driver in the accident is under investigation.

The accident is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police Troop D, MSP Collision Reconstruction Unit, and other agencies.

UPDATE (11:03 P.M.) — Massachusetts State Police have confirmed that two adults have sustained serious injuries in a late night crash involving a school bus on Route 24 South in Berkley.

Both adults were transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

All other occupants of the bus that had veered off the highway and into the woods have been accounted for. Police do not believe there were any additional injuries that were considered serious.

The bus, carrying children and parents, was returning to Tiverton, Rhode Island. Massachusetts State Police say it is not yet known where the bus was en route from.


ORIGINAL STORY (10:35 P.M.) BERKLEY — Twenty ambulances are transporting victims from a crash involving a school bus on Route 24 in Berkley. The crash was reported at around 10 p.m. Saturday on Route 24 southbound near Exit 11 in Berkley. Scanner reports indicate that a school bus veered off of the highway and crashed into the treeline along the highway. Twenty ambulances were requested to respond to the scene of the crash. According to scanner reports, there are between fifteen to twenty injuries reported in the crash.
Taunton Police report that a mass casualty incident has been declared.

All southbound lanes on Route 24 have been shut down at Exit 11.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating the crash.
