The honorary degree Bill Crosby received in 1985 from Brown University has been rescinded.

According to the Brown Daily Herald, The Corporation’s Board of Fellows decided to revoke the degree following sexual assault allegations against Cosby by 35 women.

“To the best that we can determine from available records and documents, this is the first honorary degree to be revoked by Brown,” wrote Vice President for Communications Cass Cliatt in an email to The Herald.

“The conduct that Mr. Cosby has acknowledged is wholly inconsistent with the behavior we expect of any individual associated with Brown,” she wrote. “It is particularly troubling as our university community continues to confront the very real challenges of sexual violence on our campus and in society at large, and had it been known to the Fellows in 1985, an honorary degree … would not have been conferred.”

Fordham University and Marquette University revoked Cosby’s honorary degrees Thursday. New York University removed Cosby’s name from its Future Filmmakers Workshop this September.

The petition that's purpose was to strip Cosby of his Brown degree was meant to send a message to the Corporation that sexual assault will not be tolerated at Brown University by anyone in the community. The petition was successful and his degree was rescinded yesterday.
