A generous donation from a local dog lover will help the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office get a new police dog.

According to Southcoast Today, Dolores A. (Guyon) Costa recently made a $1,000 donation to Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson’s canine program in memory of her husband, Bill Costa, who died earlier this year.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Bill Costa died on Jan. 18 after a brief illness. Formerly of New Bedford, he moved to Dartmouth in 1980. He and Dolores were married for 57 years and had 11 dogs over that time. Bill Costa’s obituary asked for donations to be made to an animal cause in lieu of flowers.

The picture above shows Ajax, the retired Canine that will be greatly missed. He will be replaced by the new donated Police Dog.

Bill Costa was clearly an animal lover and the new dog that will be added to the department will be named in his honor

Col. Robert Sylvia of the Sheriff’s Office canine program said the donation was much needed. “Funding is tight, so this will go a long way to help us purchase another canine,” he said.
