A Bristol County corrections officer is being credited with saving the life of an inmate.

According to the Bristol County Sheriff's Department, Corrections Officer Cynthia Santos sprung into action after she saw a female inmate exhibiting signs of choking in the dining area of the Women's Center at the House of Corrections in Dartmouth last week. Officer Santos rushed to the inmate and began performing the Heimlich Maneuver, which she repeated about ten times before the piece of food became dislodged from the inmate's throat.

Santos has been a corrections officer with Bristol County for five years, is originally from New Bedford and resides in Dartmouth.

In a written statement, Officer Santos said the inmate has been very thankful, reminding her of the incident throughout the past week and expressing her gratitude.
