NEW BEDFORD - New Bedford Police and Fire officials are investigating a case of suspected arson that was reported Thursday night.

New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News a grass fire was reported at 154 Birch Street in the city's south end at 10:14 p.m. Thursday. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Chief Gomes says evidence was found at the scene that leads investigators to believe the fire was not accidental.

No injuries were reported.

This is the eleventh fire in New Bedford since June that is considered to have started under suspicious circumstances. Authorities are not commenting if the cases are related to one another, though Mayor Jon Mitchell has previously stated the city may be plagued by a serial arsonist.
