DARTMOUTH — An hours-long standoff with an armed suspect has ended in an arrest in Dartmouth.

Dartmouth Police responded to 511 Old Fall River Road at 8:49 p.m. on Tuesday regarding a disturbance. When officers arrived, family members told police that a male suspect had possibly fled the residence with a firearm, and was hiding in the woods behind the home.

Assistance from the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement (SEMLEC) SWAT team was requested due to the potential volatility of the alleged armed suspect.

After the SWAT team arrived at the address, police learned that the suspect had re-entered the home and had barricaded himself inside. A police negotiator was called to the scene to provide further assistance.

The standoff continued throughout the night and into the morning hours. Police say that at around 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday, the male suspect stepped onto the back deck of the residence and fired a shot into the air.

About 35 minutes later, at 4:50 p.m., the man exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident.

The man, identified as David Lechan, 63, of 511 Old Fall River Road, was arrested and charged with assault and battery, intimidation of a witness, threats to commit a crime, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

Following his arrest, Lechan was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford to undergo an evaluation.

No injuries were reported as a result of the standoff.

Lechan is employed by the Bristol County Sheriff's Department. Jonathan Darling, spokesman for Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson, says Lechan holds a position in the property department. Darling says property personnel process and inventory personal items of inmates when they are first incarcerated, reissue their belongings upon completion of their sentence, and issue prison uniforms, hygiene items, handbooks, and other items for use during their sentence.
