A New Bedford man is shot in his own home early Monday morning.

New Bedford Police tell WBSM News the 21-year-old male victim reported three men had broken into the home at 34 Reynolds Street around 2am Monday morning, one of them armed with a gun. The armed man shot the resident in the leg, and proceeded to pistol whip him.

The victim said the three men left without taking any valuables.

The victim is being treated for his injuries at Rhode Island Hospital.

The victim told police one of the assailants was a dark-skinned male, heavyset, about 5'3" tall. A second man was also dark-skinned, with a thin build and about 5'8" tall. He could not describe the third man to police. All of the intruders are said to have been wearing dark clothing.

Police Spokesman Lt. Amos Melo says there doesn't appear to be any signs of forced entry. The shooting is under investigation.
