On Tuesday afternoon, a 2,300 pound, 14-foot, 2-inch great white was caught in the waters just off the Cape.   The "beautiful, robust" animal was brought aboard the 126-foot Ocearch vessel, where a specially adapted hydraulic lift hoisted it out of the water.

The great white tagging expedition has been anchored close to the Monomoy seal colony during August, and yesterday's tagging was the second one.   The crew of Ocearch named the shark Katherine Lee Bates, after the Cape Cod native who composed "America The Beautiful."

The team uses seal decoys to attract the great whites.  Once on board, they are quickly fitted with a $12,000 electronic tracking device.  The process takes about an hour and a half.
